STYX Devlog 1

What is STYX?

STYX is an ongoing University assignment that myself and 3 others are working on!

The river Styx was/is the river from Greek mythology that the souls of the dead were ferried down on the way to the Underworld... the aim of this game is to play as the Ferryman Charon and deliver souls to the Underworld in order to upgrade your 'ferry' and become more efficient at your job!

Breakdown of the game:

  • Single player
  • 2D pixel art, ARPG style camera similar to Diablo, Hades etc.
  • Upgrade the ship, gaining better cannons, harpoon and Charon's trust main weapon - his paddle (nice!)
  • Enemies are all based on 'accurate' Greek mythology characters... we will attempt to put our own spin on this.
  • Aim of the game is to keep your boat intact and survive the waves of enemies that come at you.
  • The in game currency is the gold coins that ancient Greeks would place on the eyelids of the dead in the belief that it would grant them safe passage to the Underworld... we will see if they were right!

For the initial start of the project I focused a lot on the coding aspect of the game. I made a good start on getting a working version of the movement, camera and melee system, but I would like to focus more on refining all of these going forward.

On the to do list still is the ship combat prototype and I am eager to make a start on this when all the basics have been completed to a good standard and the group is happy with the progress. I am also keen to implement other smaller details into the game, such as health bars, enemies, enemy combat and enemy tracking.

I realised very quickly that I was not an artist and should definitely stick to the coding aspect of things where I belong!
